How Japan Is Turning Footsteps into Energy Japan is one of the world’s leading countries in developing innovative technologies that promote sustainability and renewable energy. One of its most creative solutions is the use of energy-harvesting floors that convert the force of people’s footsteps into electricity. This technology, known as piezoelectric energy generation, captures the mechanical energy produced when people walk and transforms it into usable electrical power. The technology works by placing special piezoelectric materials beneath floor tiles. Piezoelectric materials have the unique property of generating an electric charge when pressure or mechanical stress is applied. Every time someone steps on one of these specially designed floor panels, the pressure slightly compresses the material, creating a small electrical current. Although a single step produces only a tiny amount of electricity, thousands of footsteps throughout the day can generate a significant amount of energy.
