The 1972 classic Pakeezah, starring Meena Kumari in her career-defining role as Sahibjaan, took 15 years to make. First conceived in the 1950s, the film endured years of creative, personal and financial challenges before finally reaching cinemas. Just two months after its release, Meena Kumari tragically died aged 38. Pakeezah went on to become a major box-office success, cementing its place as one of the most enduring classics of Indian cinema. Now, more than five decades later, the 153-minute film has been painstakingly restored in 4K resolution by the Film Heritage Foundation, in association with the Amrohi family, following a two-year restoration process. The restored Pakeezah will have its world premiere at the Festival Lumière in Lyon this October, followed by a special screening at the BFI London Film Festival.
