@thebigredcamaro: The Silver State Classic Challenge began in Nevada in 1988, when Dan Gottlieb worked with Nevada officials to close a stretch of Highway 318 and create one of America’s first modern open-road races. What started with about 50 cars quickly became one of the most legendary high-speed events in the country.   Then, in 1989, a 19-year-old R.J. Gottlieb showed up with a modified ’69 Camaro known as Big Red. He blasted down the course at an average of 197.99 mph, with a top speed over 220 mph, setting a record that put both Big Red and the Silver State Classic on the map.   Big Red wasn’t just competing in the early days of the Silver State—it became part of its history.
