if I feel the feelings Ive been repressing, the dam will be broken and I'll be flooded with 20+ years of repressed emotion and I just don't have the time for that

getting put in your room and told to come out when you're done crying and ready to be around grown folks is a wild experience when you learned your father died that day

For anyone contemplating this: my own recent experience ... I am very much in this bracket and it took many sessions with my therapist for me to start to feel anything. As the sessions went buy, I think I started to trust that i was safe with someone who knows what they're doing with regards to my trauma therapy, but I still was only letting out a little emotion each time and then slamming the breaks and taking back control of myself. Then my latest session yesterday, he took me through a very intense exercise, confronting some of my childhood and he coached me to feel the pain which brought it through. As usual, I controlled it to try and bring it back in line but my therapist kept repeating - "you're safe". He then said "you've got this, you can do this" and for some reason that acknowledgement of my strength to get through allowing my pain out was what I needed and I broke down. He said we could stop for now if it was too much and I said, no, I could handle it. So he continued to coach me with prompts and questions about my childhood and feelings and it's the most I've felt for years. One of the things that I realised afterwards while still in the session was that once I'd let the emotion out, I returned to a natural calm state and thought to myself - "huh, that actually ended. It didn't go on forever and I wasn't trapped in it". It was then that I understood that one of my fears was that if I allowed myself to be vulnerable and feel the emotions, there would be no going back, I would be permanently broken. But that wasn't the case. I'm very grateful to him for that.

This resonated with me, but I also have physical expressions of some of those feelings that interrupt my ability to spend feelings fully. It feels like I cant let everything out.

This!!! And it makes me fear therapy every single week because when I leave the room the feelings don’t end, I get stuck with them and the emotional flashbacks for days

My childhood was interesting because my emotional needs were met 50% of the time and 50% of the time they were ignored. My parents were never consistent.

Also being treated like you’re psychotic anytime you have an emotion your parent(s) don’t like, makes you scared you’re going to lose control and not even know it. Especially when the person threatening to send you to the psych ward for being angry is very emotionally unstable themselves. Like dang if the person who follows me around the house for hours scream-crying at me when I hold them accountable for their behaviour thinks I’m crazy, maybe I really am.😂

And the more they avoid them the more traumatized they get because the avoidance of the emotion is the trauma self-inflicted.

I never thought of it in this way and this was really eye opening for me. It really isn't about the emotion itself, but the trauma response of emotional suffering. Interesting!!

This and also my mother was overwhelmed by my emotions and explicitly told me my feelings were too strong and would get out of control unless I figured out how to stop myself from feeling them

I lowkey almost checked myself into the psych ward solely so I could feel all the feelings in a contained space. that's how afraid of them I am.

😭 thank you for mentioning the real experiences. I got left to my own devices and when I got upset (angry) I'd get the cold shower until I "chilled out", it's not easy to feel the flood of emotions like that cold shower

That was exactly the fear I had to overcome to do the work I have over the last few years. Being un-attuned to my whole life there were actually 4 that I could not touch for fear of being trapped in them; Shame, Guilt, Fear, and Anger. Getting to the point those could be handled radically transformed my life for the better, eventually it did anyway lol
