At about 1pm yesterday, airports across the country were informed of an issue with the air traffic control system that keeps planes flying safely. Waiting for the issue to be resolved, many of them grounded departures. The problems continued intermittently for more than five hours and the knock-on effect led to more than 1,000 flights being cancelled. Andy Burnham has confidence in the chief of the UK’s air traffic control service despite repeated failures, Downing Street said. The prime minister’s official spokesman said ministers had tasked Martin Rolfe with delivering a report into Tuesday’s problems within a week. Airline bosses are said to be furious about the incident, which has resulted in more than 2,000 cancelled flights and is expected to cost the industry tens of millions of pounds.
