I think we’ve started confusing access to people with connection to people. You can have hundreds of people in your contacts. And still have nobody you’d genuinely call when your life falls apart. Because knowing a lot of people and being known deeply by a few people are completely different things. As I’ve got older, I’ve become far less interested in how many people I know. I care much more about who is actually there. Who notices when I disappear. Who can tell something is wrong without me having to explain everything. Who tells me the truth when I need to hear it. Who genuinely wants good for me without competing with me. Who remembers me in their du’a when I’m not even there. Those relationships are rare. And they require something technology can never replace. Time. Presence. Sacrifice. Showing up. Sitting with someone when there’s nothing exciting happening. Being there when their life becomes inconvenient. We’ve made communication incredibly easy... But genuine friendship was never supposed to be convenient. It requires effort. And I think especially as men get older, we need to become much more intentional about maintaining these relationships. Because life gets busy. And if you’re not careful, years can pass whilst good friendships quietly disappear. Don’t measure the quality of your life by how many people know you. Look at the people who genuinely know you. You don’t need hundreds of friends. Sometimes Allah giving you one sincere brother who genuinely loves you, reminds you of Him and stands beside you when life becomes difficult... Is worth more than a thousand people who simply know your name.
