The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could be understood as one in purpose, teaching, or way, rather than one in person or identity. Jesus used the same language when He prayed that His disciples “may all be one” (John 17:21). They remained distinct people, united in faith and purpose. It would also be strange to understand the one Creator as literally talking to Himself when the Father, Son, and Spirit speak to one another. So why assume that “one” must mean one being rather than one in unity?
