Both set of lyrics are actually correct. Michelle wrote “pretend to pray” but Cass accidentally sang it as “began to pray” when recording the album and the album had already been released when the two realized they both sang two different sets of lyrics. So depending on where you hear the song sung by them, you may hear one or the other and Michelle herself has said the lyrics are whichever version you’re used to.
