Día de los Muertos is a tradition rooted in remembrance, relationship, and the belief that death does not erase the bonds we have with those who came before us. 🦋 Across Mexico, Día de los Muertos is observed in different ways depending on region, family, and community, but at its heart is memoria. Ofrendas are prepared with photographs, candles, water, favorite foods, flowers, and meaningful belongings. They are acts of care. A way of saying: I remember you. You still have a place here. Cempasúchil, the bright marigold so closely associated with Día de los Muertos, is traditionally used to help create a fragrant, vibrant path for our beloved dead. Copal has long held ceremonial significance in Mesoamerica, its smoke carrying prayer and offering. Food and water nourish after the long journey home. Candles illuminate the way. And then there are the monarchs. 🦋 Their annual migration into central Mexico coincides with the season of Día de los Muertos, and in some communities they have come to be understood as carrying or representing the returning souls of ancestors. Their arrival is another reminder of return, transformation, and the cycles that connect life and death. This is the spirit behind my Día de los Muertos collection. Not death as something frightening. Not ancestors as something distant. But remembrance as relationship. To speak their names. To tell their stories. To make their favorite foods. To sit at the altar. To laugh about the things they used to do. To let scent carry us back to a kitchen, a garden, a perfume, a person. To teach the next generation about who came before them. The preorder for this collection has already closed, and its period of creation and consecration has begun. I did make a small number of extras while preparing the batches, and those extras are now available on the site. 🤗 #diademuertos #ritual #tradition #mexicantraditions #ofrenda
