@idailyathlete: Allen Iverson was once one of the most exciting young athletes in America, starring in both football and basketball in Virginia. Then a 1993 bowling alley brawl changed everything. Iverson was convicted and sent to prison, and virtually every college program that had been recruiting him disappeared. He ultimately served about four months before receiving clemency, and his conviction was later overturned, but at the time it looked like his basketball career might be over before it ever really began. Georgetown coach John Thompson refused to walk away. Already a national championship-winning coach with his own reputation on the line, Thompson visited Iverson while he was incarcerated and later gave him a scholarship. Once Iverson arrived at Georgetown, Thompson became much more than a coach, protecting him from distractions, media pressure and people trying to take advantage of a teenager suddenly carrying enormous expectations. Two years later, Iverson became the No. 1 overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft. He went on to win MVP, become an 11-time All-Star and enter the Basketball Hall of Fame. During his Hall of Fame speech, Iverson publicly thanked Thompson for the impact he had on his life.
