Former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat took a rather unexpected jab at one of the most talked-about gifts of his premiership today, describing the watch Yorgen Fenech gave him as “ikrah pesti”, or hideous. But if you need a reminder of the watch he was talking about, Lovin Malta first broke the story back in 2019. Sources had told Lovin Malta that Fenech gifted Muscat a limited-edition white-gold Bvlgari watch, reportedly worth around €20,000, at Christmas 2014. The watch was reported to be number 17 of just 25 pieces produced to mark Malta’s accession to the European Union in 2004, earning it the memorable nickname “17 White” in Lovin Malta’s original report. However, speaking today, Muscat said the watch was actually number 3, contradicting the information reported by Lovin Malta at the time. The existence of a Bvlgari watch worth around €15,000 - €20,000 was subsequently referenced in a report by the Commissioner for Standards in Public Life, where it appeared in an inventory of gifts. Seven years after Lovin Malta’s original exclusive, the watch has now made an unexpected return to the conversation, although it appears its former owner wasn’t particularly impressed with its looks. “Ikrah pesti,” Muscat said.
