Before the world knew The Big O, Otis was winning the Douglass Theatre talent contest in Macon so often that, after 15 straight victories, he was no longer allowed to compete. His Stax story began in 1962 when he drove guitarist Johnny Jenkins to a Memphis session. With a little studio time left over, Otis stepped to the microphone and recorded “These Arms of Mine.” Four extraordinary years followed: “Mr. Pitiful,” “Respect,” “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” “Try a Little Tenderness” and, finally, “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” which became the first posthumous No. 1 hit on the Hot 100.
