@2doods_dennis: “We” and “dem” sounds like a simple division. But listen deeper, and the question becomes much more uncomfortable. Who benefits when people remain divided? Who suffers while others hold the power? And when we recognize injustice for what it is where do we choose to stand? Bob Marley released “We And Dem” in 1980, during a period when Jamaica had lived through intense political division, violence and economic inequality. But Marley’s music repeatedly pushed beyond party colors. His Rastafari worldview gave him another lens through which to examine power, righteousness, oppression and accountability. That’s what makes this song feel bigger than one moment in Jamaican history. Because the names change. The politicians change. The arguments change. The generation changes. But division remains one of the easiest ways to keep ordinary people fighting each other instead of questioning what is happening above them. And maybe that’s where We And Dem becomes a mirror. It’s easy to identify who we believe “dem” are. It’s much harder to ask whether our own silence, comfort, prejudice, loyalty or indifference ever puts us on the wrong side. Roots reggae was never only music to escape the world. Sometimes it was music asking us to look directly at it. 🌱 ROOTS MEANING: When injustice picks a side, silence picks one too. #RootsReggae #BobMarley #ReggaeHistory #ConsciousReggae #RootsMeaning
