@kendraworth: When you stop telling your kids what to do and start working together, everything shifts. Collaborative parenting means you're still the parent—you set the boundaries. But instead of demanding compliance, you invite your child into the problem-solving process. You ask what they think, you listen, you work toward a solution together. Here's the thing: the more often kids cooperate, the more you train their brain 🧠 for future cooperation. The more often you control them, the more you train their brain for defiance. So even though this is VERY time consuming now, I’m setting the stage for a self-motivated, confident, autonomous & respectful big kid later on! Some of the long-term benefits: Kids learn to think instead of just react. They develop real problem-solving skills that stick with them into adulthood. They build stronger emotional regulation and resilience. Trust deepens in the relationship—not just obedience. Power struggles decrease and cooperation increases. Plus, they grow up knowing their voice actually matters and feel respected by their parents. No but literally “a rushed child is an anxious child” as someone with anxiety I try to practice as much patience with my son as possible!

She’s literally still rear facing in her car seat. That’s about as young as kids can get and still communicate. Sure, she’s little enough that you could easily pick her up while she screams but working on this now and having a foundation of cooperation is going to save you SO much effort in the coming years.

And it took fucking forever for no reason, instead of just unbuckling her and telling her to get out of the car or you’ll leave her there all night, alone, in the dark.

I pray I have as much patience as you haha. Ours is a very stubborn one year old so I'm already holding on for the 'terrible twos'. But yeah if we can give her more independence and choice like this, it will probably be a less combative experience.

this is literally so sweet. I love seeing parents be patient and let their kids have silly experiences, even If it takes longer or is frustrating
