Once upon a time, artists started on the guitar and then moved it to the piano to build song progression.

This is really great advice. It’s a fantastic visual for those that can’t see the entire production in what ranges each instrument lives in.

Testing the hook with just the melody is a clean way to make sure it actually holds up. Going to try this.

Honest tip I feel like this only really applies to singers but if you came up with a melody I would say try to transfer the melody to the piano that’s what I usually do and it kind of works the best because for me

I do this on piano and got so much better at comprehending different guitar tuning structures in the process.

Honestly this is crazy ball knowledge. I was just talking about this the other day with a homie that doesn’t make music and I was explaining some basic music theory and how people get to caught up in the sound selection process versus having a solid foundation that functions on one instrument like the piano. It’s genuinely the best way to start out as a beginner especially if you don’t know how to arrange yet and mix and master. It will allow you to hear what’s needed versus a sound that you’re going through 8000 presets or samples.

Wrote a song like this not long ago. Its super helpful to fill out the whole frequency spectrum because you can see all the octaves. I would say be purposeful with what melody goes into what octave.

good trick, problem is the piano isn't always great for inspiration. Inspiration is something that comes to you, if it takes a synth, a fx, a vocal, a drum, a bird noise, whatever it is, as long as it sparks your inspiration, go ahead.

That's actually great advice if you use it correctly. When I find my self doing that I make the most memorable melodies in one instrument, then I make all the backround elements and at the end i layer a part of the main sound or change it completely.
