@streetsblognyc: Congestion has plagued Austin Street in Forest Hills for decades. If officials want to bring meaningful improvements to this vibrant commercial area of Queens, they’re probably going to have to think outside the box — especially when it comes to transit. Worthwhile change is possible, but it will require the state-run MTA and city-run DOT to coordinate with one another. Read more from Pedro Rodriguez at nyc.streetsblog.org Video by Henry Beebe-Center
Why is getting rid of cars always the answer how about a municipal parking lot problem solved. They will make the money back within the year

I guarantee the people who drive to Austin street will not opt for public transportation ergo the commercial corridor will lose revenue. It might not be substantial at first but eventually it will decline on an already declining area

No one who drives to Austin would take the bus

Safe to assume the cop didn’t hand out any tickets to the double parked cars. Lack of enforcement is a huge contributor on why traffic frequently grinds to a halt because people are comfortable blocking lanes without penalty

my sis used to work on Austin Street and if she asked me to pick her up I'd be like "you'd better be ready to jump in the car, I don't feel like being the problem on Austin today"

But where do the cars go? They are just pushed to another street with the same problems. A solid solution would be enforcement on double parked cars and intersection obstructions the root cause of the congestion

Double parking needs to be heavily enforced there. Yellowstone and Ascan lights need to be coordinated better with queens blvd.

I live on the corner of Ascan and Austin. was thinking about going to a community board meeting, I want to open streets-ify Austin street... I also want a bus line that travels down ascan, perhaps also go down to metropolitan and do a loop around there back over to yellowstone, and back down to queens blvd or Austin

Forest Hills native here. I'm amazed that anyone tries to park on Austin Street; chances of finding a spot are miniscule. Turning the empty lot down by the precinct into a parking lot would help some.

Or, maybe just immediately start ticketing double parkers whether their sitting in their vehicle or not.

Closing the street and making it only for busses and pedestrians will SIGNIFICANTLY increase traffic in the surrounding streets and decrease parking availability.
Just look at streets surrounding 34ave..
This does not slove the problem.
