Yabbian day at Mum and Dad’s place 🦞💦 Just before Christmas, and this has been a bit of a tradition for us for years now. Heading down to the dam, dropping the nets in, and catching our own home-grown yabbies. Doesn’t get much more Aussie than that 🇦🇺 A lot of people don’t realise that taking a few yabbies out is actually a good thing. If left unchecked, yabbies will out-compete each other and even eat each other out, so harvesting some helps keep the population healthy and allows them to regenerate properly. Big learning moment too 👇 Victoria used to allow Opera House nets in rivers and later only in private waterways. A couple of years ago they were fully banned, even on private dams, because of the damage they caused to wildlife. If turtles or platypus got into them, they couldn’t surface and would drown. As strange as it sounds, turtle drownings were common, and there’s nothing sadder than seeing a rare platypus lost that way. There was a buy-back scheme, and now these wildlife-safe alternatives are the go. I’m a massive supporter of them. They’re safe, effective, and catch yabbies just as well as anything I’ve ever used. Bonus wildlife moment 🦆 We had a big family of Wood Ducks come in while we were yabbian. Fun fact a lot of people don’t know, Wood Ducks are actually born in tree hollows. Yep, ducks born in trees, not on the swamp floor. Yabbie tips for anyone keen 👇 • Yabbies aren’t just meat eaters, they’re happy vegetarians • Carrots work an absolute treat • Even bars of soap can work as bait • No smelly meat needed How to tell males from females 🦞 • Males usually have larger claws and a softer bump between the claws • Females have smaller claws and a harder, flatter plate underneath, which is where they carry eggs Me and Ashlee had the best day, caught heaps of yabbies, learned a few new tricks, and just enjoyed being together outdoors. Family, traditions, wildlife, and a dam full of yabbies… doesn’t get much better than that. ONYA 👊🦞
