I'm sorry that this happened to you, but I really think you're looking at this all wrong. Telling him you're trans made him reveal his true colours, allowing you to easily dodge a bullet. And you did it in a public environment, reducing the likelihood of him becoming violent. How do you think that would have ended if you had the discussion at his house??? You should continue telling them upfront to protect yourself from the many transphobes.
