I think it’s the same for anyone offering a service. I have a dog training business and have a policy if short notice then they don’t get the money back. I have it to protect myself if needed. Life happens and being flexible is good when you can.

As a host I’ve found that losing out on a little money now somehow always works out in the long run. It’s like karma exists.

Sometimes these hosts need to think about what they themselves would want to happen if they were put in these situations. They seem to forget that sometimes.

Having some cancellations due to inclement weather or similar situations are part of the cost of doing business.

A couple years back my husband and I were booked to visit an Airbnb in our state but walked out the morning we were supposed to leave to find that our car had been stolen. We were so grateful for the host being flexible with us and allowing us to rebook because it was the overall shitty situation.

if a hotel would definitely or likely refund a customer, so should an airbnb host. if someone doesn't want to be in the hospitality business, they shouldn't be in the hospitality business.

I KNOW that he booked with you again with the thought of the fact that you fully refunded him at the forefront of his mind, and given that he had a good time I wouldnt be surprised if he were to become a regular guest when he travels your way!!

This can also go the other way like when Helene hit Appalachia in nc. Like Im sure people would love love to give you a refund on your cabin that you now can’t get to but if they were in that local area they also have no power and no service to even contact their families much less cancel your booking

Don’t hosts have some kind of insurance to protect them in these situations?

I worked at Airbnb 10 years ago, and if I remember the extenuating circumstances policy, Airbnb can refund the guest outside of the cancellation policy. When Zika was a thing, we were instructed to refund guests if one of the guests was pregnant.

Give a little and get a little in return. If a trip needs to be cancelled for raging fires nearby etc and you say yes here’s the refund, you’ll probably see that guest next year when they are able to make that trip

I agree about that lack of empathy,, but if the guests purchased insurance, wouldn’t their stay be refunded? Why should the financial burden be on the hosts?
