The archaeologists found the horse beneath the ancient soil, its enormous skull lying sideways in the darkness. At first, they believed it had been deliberately buried with its rider. Then they noticed the iron bit still locked between its teeth. The horse’s jaw was stretched open. Its ribs were broken inward, and the bones of its legs were twisted beneath its body. Around its skull were fragments of leather, pieces of harness, and a long, rusted metal object that had once belonged to a warrior. But there was something worse. The soil beneath the horse’s hooves was covered in deep scratches. The marks formed frantic circles. The horse had not died peacefully. It had been trapped underground while still alive. Its hooves had struck the earth again and again, desperately trying to escape. The final scratches stopped only a few centimeters beneath its bones. The archaeologists continued excavating. Under the horse’s skull, they found a human skeleton. The rider. His hands were still gripping the reins. The strange part was that the rider’s bones showed no signs of injury. He had not been killed in battle. He had been buried alive with his horse. As the excavation grew deeper, the archaeologists discovered dozens of tiny hoofprints preserved in the hardened soil. They led away from the horse’s grave. And they were fresh. That night, the excavation site was abandoned. By morning, the horse skeleton was no longer lying on its side. It was standing. Its ancient bones were balanced upright in the pit. The rusted bit was still hanging from its jaw.
