However, the rest of the verse says this happened “because of the terrible famine.” Other translations render the Hebrew as skin becoming “hot as an oven” from hunger. According to Matthew, his family later fled with him to Egypt before eventually returning. So the historical picture isn’t a blond, blue-eyed European Jesus. But it also can’t simply be reduced to modern American categories of “Black” and “white.” The biblical world existed at the crossroads of Africa, the Levant, Arabia, and the Mediterranean—a world far more diverse than centuries of European religious artwork might make you think.
