Note: I had permission to capture this location for educational purposes. There is a strict no photography rule, please respect this when you visit 🫶🏽 I am standing 12 metres below street level in an ancient Jewish ritual bath, called a mikveh — one of the oldest and largest in Europe. The word mikveh literally means “a gathering of water.” This mikveh lies beneath Giudecca, the old Jewish quarter of Syracuse. The community lived here from as early as the 3rd century BCE, perhaps even earlier, until their expulsion in December of 1492. They were expelled in 1492 as part of the Alhambra Decree issued by King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile, who ruled over Spanish territories, including Sicily at the time. The baths themselves date between the 3rd and 6th centuries CE and were used for ritual purification in different ways for men and women. Unmarried women immersed here before their weddings, married women after menstruation or childbirth. Men and women would also bathe before Yom Kippur, the Sabbath, or handling sacred texts. It was also used by those converting to Judaism. The main chamber holds three spring fed baths. In the same space you’ll also find a circular chamber of water — an Ancient Greek well that predates the mikveh. This well likely revealed the presence of spring water, prompting the builders to carve out the ritual baths here. Two side chambers contain additional pools, bringing the total to five. On the walls, chisel marks remain visible — traces of the ancient workers who shaped this sacred space nearly 2,000 years ago. When the Jews of Syracuse were expelled, they buried the mikveh beneath loads of mud and sealed its entrance in stone. This dark line on the walls shows how high the mud once reached. For the next 500 years it lay hidden, until the 20th century when Amalia Daniele di Bagni purchased a crumbling property above. Curious about a mysterious archway, she knocked through — and uncovered a 2,000-year-old staircase that led to this forgotten mikveh. Today, at 80 years old, she still owns the hotel that stands above it. 📍Bagno Ebraico Mikveh, Syracuse, Sicily #sicilyhistory #jewishhistory #historytok
