Characterized by an admixed profile of roughly 55% Caucasus hunter-gatherer/Neolithic Iranian and 35% Eastern European hunter-gatherer ancestry, the CLV cline resolves the longstanding "Anatolian paradox"—the fact that early Indo-European speakers in Bronze Age Anatolia, such as the Hittites, lacked the classic northern steppe (EHG) DNA associated with the Yamnaya. Under this framework, Proto-Indo-Anatolian experienced its initial divergence in the CLV zone around 4200–4000 BCE: one branch migrated south across the Caucasus into Anatolia, introducing the ancestral Anatolian languages alongside a modest Caucasus genetic imprint without northern steppe ancestry, while the remaining population expanded westward across the Pontic-Caspian steppe.
