@mom.behind.the.scenes: This is how we parent in our home. I don’t expect others to make the same decisions that I’m comfortable with. (Also, we have a whole ton of safeguards in place.)
I believe in strict parents create sneaky children. Stopping them from having social media is more damaging then allowing them and teaching them the dos and don’ts of social media

I'm 31 now and remember getting groomed to hell (to the point my mother reported to police) online.

I 1000% agree! I keep saying I like to give them the privilege of having something while I’m still there to catch them in case they fall

My daughter came home from a sleep over at age 9 and told me she tried to cover her eyes and not see it. Not see what? Floppy dicks. That’s what she called them. The host child introduced her to a dating site that included said dicks. I am glad she felt she could tell me

I have an 11 year old with ADHD and autism. please would you mind talking more about the safeguards and conversations. I don't know how to handle this phase and would love to model your method.

I was the teen that was told no social media when MySpace and Facebook were getting started. Guess who secretly created both of those among others? My mom still doesn't know just how many social accounts I had. Most of them are defunct now, but I still think about all the friends I made and the creeps I encountered along the way of figuring it out on my own.

Now thats parenting. A balance between giving your kids freedom but also guidance, supervision and boundaries. Taking an active role in their education!

Not showing them just makes them sneak to do it. Better to do it safely in my opinion.

Cygnet's Rest :
I let my kids climb, swim, jump, run, and explore as toddlers so they would learn to assess their abilities and outside risks while I was there to help them navigate those situations. I view social media the same way. Do I like it? Nope. But I do accept that they need to learn to navigate it? Absolutely!
