Sources below: Spartans had a desperately small population size, due to ~90% being enslaved. Spartans thus were required by law to fight and keep fit until 60. King Leonidas was 59 when he fought and died in the 300. Although Spartan young frequently fought, Sparta was always keen to avoid having them fight, either by sending the elderly or by simply refusing to fight a lot of the time. Sparta's army still shrunk from ~6000 to just 1000, much due to stripping more and more citizens of citizenship. Source Michael Whitby on Spartans fighting until 60, but also only being allowed to go home to his wife after age 30: “Only when he was 30 years old, however, was he allowed to leave the barracks and live at home with his wife and family. he was still required to keep fit for military service through hunting. He was obliged to serve in the army until he reached the age of 60. and he was expected to spend most of his day in public with his contemporaries, instructing and correcting younger Spartiates” --------------- Source: Herodutus records Sparta’s 300 were all fathers. “He now came to Thermopylae with the appointed three hundred he had selected, all of whom had sons” --------------- Source: Emily mackil on Sparta’s drastically declining population: “The Spartiate population declined from 8000 in the early fifth century to less than 1000 in the mid-fourth, and caused Sparta’s political fortunes to drop dramatically from being the unofficial hegemon of the Greek-speaking peoples to a strictly local power in the Hellenistic period. This was the most dramatic population change of any ancient Greek city aside from cases of antagonisms, and it drew the attention of contemporaries to the process such as Aristotle and Xenophon”
