When american soldiers were killed at the rio grande arguably on american soil but it played no legitimate part of colonization, without respect to the legal rights of the inhabitants. the courts have reviewed california's unique history and found that these california indians particularly those mission indians or those who had received some interaction or training from the catholic priests and that these california indians and indian tribes very weakness stems from governmental interference contrary to and not in harmony with or the u s constitution. the first military governor richard b mason stated that that he had no other choice than to turn over California to a local civil government, I could not uphold federal promises to the indians. Because his soldiers had left for the gold fields, and he had no one left to defend the indian lands against squatters
