Sorry for bothering you during this but this will affect all aspects of life for individuals with a Learning Disability, Autism and Neurodivergence in Scotland. During this week Scottish Learning Disability Nursing week. The Scottish Government announced the scrapping of the Learning Disabilities, Autism and Neurodivergence Bill. Many individuals including myself shared very personal experiences to inform this legislation and were hopeful that this could be a big change to the inequalities faced but the individuals who vary greatly in person centred needs that this legislation would hopefully support and protect. I am an LD nurse also and I know so many families, individuals, care professionals, healthcare services, charities did so much work to make sure that this addressed the barriers faced. The proposal to localise funding and not have consistent legislation is something I see as a huge barrier every day and what’s level of training understanding, remit and support varies greatly from location to location with seemingly identical services on the surface this would help to create consistency. I’m upset with how this will affect me personally but in the grand scheme of things that’s a scratch on the surface for some of the individuals I work with who have limited input into their own lives due to capacity or communication difficulties. There is an open letter going round to encourage the government to reconsider. Especially with the current ASN education plan not catering to those with moderate to severe learning disabilities at all with protocol to still place vulnerable individuals in schools that are mainstream and not equipped to provide them with a quality education. That and the plan to phase out all 1:1 staff for non-physical health needs. This plan could’ve been the first positive change since the keys to life and even that had mixed results. If you google LDAN Bill letter the petition should pop up. Hopefully we can make a difference.
