I'm trans and pregnant and horrified of dealing with everything.

I hate when the second you have a child, your personhood is erased and you’re just “mama”

The nurse caring for me called me Mama...right after my daughter died in the NICU and I had just gotten back to my room. I immediately burst into tears. I think I probably traumatized her 😬

I just call them “friend” if I can’t remember their name. “Hey friend, I’m just going to take your vitals real quick here”

I’d rather have a nurse walk in and be like “wassup bitch,” than hear “how are we doing Mama?!” 😭

A lot of my nurses were younger and they called me “sis”. I loved it because it made me feel comfortable like with a friend. Otherwise they just called me my name.

My labor nurse called me “babe,” “queen,” and “baddie” most of the time. She also used my name, but tbh, I love the fun names because it keeps things light hearted!

That’s kind of like calling someone anus when they go in for a colonoscopy

If you don’t know my name, you don’t have to use it! I rarely use people’s names when talking directly to them! “How are we doing MAMA?” can just be “how are we doing?”

in a similar vein it annoys me when nurses/doctors call the baby simply "baby" like its a name. "here comes baby" "we had to do x for baby" etc. like just say the baby. the child. say their name even

it was my biggest pet peeve being called Mama by a stranger while I was pushing. It already feels like they don't see you as a human being, why make it worse.

I had about 10 hours notice between finding out my stomach ache wasn't appendicitis and being rolled into the NICU to meet my son, and the hospital refused to stop calling me mama. Like, can you not? I'm not even attached to this thing yet, and you've already erased my name and identity in your mind.

Yep! It just can sound condescending and a little demeaning especially in an incredibly vulnerable situation like giving birth lol I don’t think it’s intended that way though. My OB is always like “hey girl” and I’m totally comfortable with that because that’s her vibe and I still feel seen as a woman- not a mom.

I'm trans (pre everything for medical reasons) and currently pregnant and I honestly want to cry every time a Dr or nurse calls me mama. I have never wanted to be a mom. I have never wanted anyone to call me that. I'm dad. I will always be dad. but unfortunately the people that are on my care team don't care. Ive corrected every single Dr and nurse, I had them write it on my file, I have done everything I can possibly think of and it just doesn't make a difference.

I actually HATE being called mama. Mama is a title, I have a name and it’s Amanda. I also don’t call the parents of my clients Mama, Dada, mom, dad or so and so’s mom. I hate when doctors offices do that- like my name is in the freaking chart, look at it.

I hate it. I’m jasmine. I’m not super sickly, but I’ve had enough ailments to interact with the health system a lot. My name has never been a problem. February 2009. I get the lines on the test and it starts by August 2009. I no longer have a name. And it is 2026 and I still do not have a name when I’m interacting with anything that has to do with my child. It makes a little bit more sense now that he’s the focus, but there was no reason for people to be calling me mama when the baby wasn’t even born.

I just say “friend” if I just blank and really can’t remember their name at that moment or their name or preferred nickname.

Also do not ever call me a birthing person. Cool if other people want to be called that. But not me

it drove me up the wall being called mumma while in labour and after. like... I have a name. the fact that I was about to be a mother doesn't cancel out the fact that I am a human being with a name.

I told my pediatrician (who was amazingly straight forward and no-nonsense) that I refused to see one of her partners because he called me Mommy multiple times and baby talked to me.

I had them write on my patient whiteboard that I did NOT want to be called mama and all of my nurses were soo soo good at following that. They just called me my name or didn’t call me anything. Amazing 10/10

I specifically put in my birth plan to not call me Mom, Mama, Mommy, none of that. I put "please call me my name, I am a person." I had one nurse slip up and she immediately apologized. I know it's not meant to be demeaning or dehumanizing but I can't stand it. They still called my husband "Dad" though, and he didn't correct it. 😁
