@theventure: Tag @bchesky to see it ๐ In the six weeks Airbnb lost 80% of its business, Chesky paid everyone in full. Guests were refunded, hosts got a relief fund, and the 1,900 people he laid off got months of pay, a year of healthcare and Airbnb's own recruiters to find them new jobs. The lenders got over 10% interest and a valuation cut from $31 billion to $18 billion. He could have squeezed any of them and he squeezed none. That was how he got through the six weeks. Getting the business back was a separate problem, and the answer was in where Airbnb's homes are. Hotels sit in city centres and beside airports. Airbnb's homes sit in every town within a drive, and a drive was the only trip anyone would take. He rebuilt the app around nearby stays. Six months later Airbnb made $1.34 billion in a quarter and $219 million of profit. It went public in December at $68, opened at $146, and was worth $100 billion, more than Marriott, Hilton and Hyatt combined.
