@jacobdoesmoney2: Two people each invest $10,000 ten years ago. One buys QQQ, the Nasdaq-100. The other buys SPY, the plain S&P 500. QQQ: $10,000 to $73,406. Up 7.34x. SPY: $10,000 to $41,712. Up 4.17x. This is not a fee story, both are legitimate, low-cost index funds. It comes down to what each one actually holds. QQQ is concentrated in around 100 of the biggest tech and growth names. SPY spreads across all 500 S&P companies, every sector included. The last decade rewarded that tech concentration heavily. But concentration cuts both ways. In 2022, QQQ dropped 22%, almost double SPY's 12% decline that same year. The extra growth came with extra bumps along the way. If you want the Nasdaq-100 today, the cheaper way in is QQQM, same index, lower fee, it just does not have a full 10-year track record yet since it launched in 2020.
