A friend told me something like this once. He said when he likes a girl he can’t have and realizes he’s not moving on, he starts demeaning her in his head. “She probably sleeps around,” “she probably has a guy somewhere who used her,” etc. Just anything to make her seem less desirable so he can lose the feelings. And I asked him, why can’t you just think, “Maybe she’s taken and has someone who genuinely loves and treats her well”? Why does she have to become a terrible person in your head for you to move on? I told him he needs to work on that because that’s not healthy. You shouldn’t have to destroy someone’s image in your mind just to let them go.
