And that’s it. 😂 I don’t use dessert as a reward for finishing dinner because I want to keep foods neutral. Dessert isn’t something they have to “earn,” and dinner isn’t something they have to finish to get it. I try to decide ahead of time when we’re having a dessert or special snack. If I’ve already told my kids popsicles are happening after dinner, then popsicles are part of the plan—regardless of how much dinner they eat. But if popsicles weren’t planned and they ask for one after dinner? The answer is simply, “No popsicle tonight. We can add it to the menu for next week!” If they’re still hungry, I’ll offer a cheese stick or applesauce. My goal is to keep food neutral while still having boundaries around when foods are offered.
