@thetimes: In December 2007, John Kiriakou exposed one of America’s darkest secrets to an audience of millions on primetime television. Wearing a suit and tie, the former CIA counterterrorism officer revealed that his colleagues had waterboarded terror suspects to extract information in the wake of the September 11 attacks. It was an admission borne from a sense of duty. His knowledge of the CIA’s torture tactics left him disillusioned with the agency he once revered. He thought the public needed to know the truth. “I felt that waterboarding was something that we needed to do,” Kiriakou told ABC. “But as time has passed I think I’ve changed my mind. We’re Americans and we’re better than this.” The revelation that interrogators had tortured suspects carried far-reaching political, legal and diplomatic consequences for the United States. For many Americans, it created a moral dilemma that fundamentally altered their view on the war on terror. Six years after Kiriakou leaked sensitive information to journalists, he was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison. Today, he is pleading for a retrospective pardon from President Trump 🔗 Tap the link to read more 📸 Michael McCoy for The Times 📸 Department of Defense / MCT / Getty 📸 Allsport / Getty *FOR NEWS PURPOSES* #whistleblower #johnkiriakou #cia #usnews #presidenttrump

He didn’t go to prison for telling the truth, he went to prison for directly naming undercover agents and compromising national security by naming those agents which is in their contract.🤦♂️

Sooo how does one get info from these monsters? Ask nicely? Like Jack Nicholas’s character said in A Few Good Men, “ You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!”

Yes, we can honour the dead and the heroism of so many that day, while acknowledging that the governments did horrible things in the name of “the war on terror” in the years after.
