It was named this because Europeans of the 17th and 18th century relied on PHONETICALLY writing down variants of the ORIGINAL NATIVE NAMES. One of the earlier names BEFORE MIAGARA /NIAGRA was an IROQUOIAN root word: ONGUIAAHRA. Derived from the Iroquoian languages spoken by the Natives Nation of the Great Lakes. ONGUIAAHRA was the name of an ancient village along Lake Erie and Ontario. It means “THE NECK” in Mohawk and “THE STRAIT” in Seneca languages. Over decades of map engraving, the initial O and N sounds were frequently misread or stylized into M or J, resulting in labels like MIAGARA. Mid colonials maps settled into the modern spelling NIAGRA.
