@audeevillaraza: I never really understood my Dad when I was young. His love language was communicated through strict discipline. As a child, I wasn't equipped to understand that. But in the months before he passed away, I was blessed that I was given the opportunity to listen to stories about how he grew up. I learned about his childhood and his upbringing. That was a big turning point. It opened a window for me to understand how the way he raised us was greatly shaped by the way he was also raised. That made me understand him (and his generation) better. It's a beautiful thing when you learn that every generation has its own language that's shaped by the time they grew up in. (Of course, this should never excuse abuse or wrongdoing. But perhaps in understanding their story, we can respond with wisdom and compassion) Understanding my Dad’s (Boomer) generation helped me appreciate him better. Now, I pray I can do the same with my children whose world is already so different from mine. When I stopped comparing generations, I realized that no generation is cooler or better than the other. I began to listen and understand people more. Through that understanding, perhaps we can learn to love (and express that love) in a language they can understand.
