And additional crazy thought - if the research being published is 💩, do a better job at teaching how to do proper research at lower levels, and then do a better job at peer reviewing journal submissions so the 💩 doesn’t get published. (Coming from someone who was doing independent research in psychology at the undergrad level with strict faculty guidance)

Throughout grad school I also came to realize just how privileged an activity publishing truly is! And you pay extra to make your research open access so the knowledge can be put into practice without pay walls. 🤯

Idk why I can write a paper on ACEs and the impacts on long term physical health outcomes, but med students should be precluded from doing research. I’m desperate for folks in medicine to be curious about the human experience, and see people instead of symptoms. Let’s reward that curiosity and research! It’s how we stay on the cutting edge of medicine, and it benefits patients.

Honestly the real problem is not medical school acceptance. Yes I agree that needs to change as well. But the real reason that premed students shouldn't publish is because they simply are not knowledgeable enough to publish and it is polluting the pool of research on the internet. The second a 20 year old "premed" spends a few months in a lab, they "publish a paper" and that is so negative for the research community because it is polluting. Publishing shouldn't be for the sole sake of having a paper on your name as author or co-author. It should be genuinely adding something to the scientific community. And mostly for those premeds, it just isn't adding enough to be justified. Their contributions could better be a single paragraph or section in a much later and more comprehensive paper from their PIs but usually this doesn't align with their own premed timeline so they end up publishing a bunch of non-necessary "papers" even though they are not scientifically credible enough.
