@ft_muslimsraisedbynarcs: Allah orders us to maintain ties with our parents, and to treat them with kindness. Cutting ties with a loving and caring parent who wants good for you, is absolutely forbidden and a major sin. Anyone who does without valid reason has fallen into a major sin. However, there is another type of parent which people rarely talk about. It's the parent who makes their child's life absolutely miserable. They verbally abuse their child, make sure their reputation gets damaged, and would even consider practising black magic on their child. For such parents, maintaining ties would not only be harmful, it would let the parent get away with it. And that of course is super unfair for the victim. Allah calls us to stand for justice (4:135 Quran) yet we tell victims they still owe their abuser. That's not fair at all. Severely abusive parents do not deserve any further access to the child they abused. That is from justice.
