In 2001, the letters were rearranged to form STEM because it was easier to say and remember. Since we pronounce STEM as one word, it is an acronym. An initialism, such as NHC, AI, or MRI, is pronounced one letter at a time. We also learned to choose a or an according to sound: a STEM project, an AI project, and an MRI project. STEM represents promising career opportunities, too. In 2024, the median wage for STEM occupations was $103,580, compared with $48,000 for non STEM occupations. As a group, STEM careers tend to pay more, although salaries vary by occupation, education, experience, and location.
