Saying, “Because you wanted me to go get the sushi and didn’t want to go with me, I’m going to make you give me gas money for going alone,” is basically saying, “You inconvenienced me, so now I’m going to financially punish you for it." But turning a normal situation into, “You made me go alone, so now you owe me money,” teaches the child that when they make a choice their parent doesn’t like, the parent can retaliate financially is all you taught him.

The way I would have took his $15, doubled it with my own money to make $30, and bought sushi and drinks and cupcakes for us both to enjoy together at home, and never would have considered doing anything less. But, I also don’t have any issues bonding with my stepdaughter, or with my kids wanting to spend time with me. You do you, I guess.
