@theknottygarden: 🍅 Want to ripen tomatoes indoors before cold weather hits? Once tomatoes reach the breaker stage, meaning you can see that first blush of colour, their ripening process is already underway. Tomatoes are climacteric fruit, so once ethylene production begins, they can continue developing colour, texture and flavour after harvest. Here’s how I ripen breaker-stage tomatoes indoors: 🍅 Pick once you see the first hint of colour 📦 Place them in a cardboard box or paper bag at room temperature 🍅 The enclosed space helps concentrate the ethylene they naturally produce ✨ Check them regularly as they finish ripening I’ve already done three rounds of this with my tomato harvest this season, and 10/10 would recommend. At breaker stage, those tomatoes no longer need to stay on the plant to finish ripening, so you can bring them safely indoors while leaving your less mature tomatoes outside for as much growing time as possible. It’s one of my favourite late-season tomato growing tips because it can also save your harvest from hungry critters, insect damage and cold weather before they get to those nearly ripe tomatoes first.
