Jev is a new AI model from TypeSafe AI claiming to be dramatically faster and cheaper than frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic. But there’s a catch. Jev isn’t trying to be another ChatGPT. It can’t write essays, generate code, or freely respond in natural language. Instead, developers define the possible decisions ahead of time, and Jev chooses between them with probabilities. Think: Is this fraud? Should we issue a refund? Which team gets this? Should an AI agent retry, escalate, or call a different tool? That sounds a lot like classification, but the interesting part is that Jev is designed to be a general-purpose model for many kinds of structured decisions instead of training a separate classifier for every task. And that might matter a lot for AI agents. Agents make tiny decisions constantly, and today we often use giant language models for all of them.
