After you learn mandarin, languages like Korean and Japanese are much easier because these are related

Only mildly annoyed? Jeez, 90% of Americans wouldn’t even try to use a translator app with Chinese tourists, and I’m sure at least 5% would verbally assault them, tell them to go back to China, and threaten to call ICE on them!

Did you learn anything about immigration policy, perchance? The impression I've been given is it's damn near impossible.

For me it’s the opposite with learning languages. When languages are too similar I mix up the words and when they’re super different I can differentiate/remember easier

I feel like with the pronunciation thing, a lot of people are used to where they place their own native language (English, especially North American English, is places in the lips and mouth) Spanish is in the cheeks, for example. For me personally I feel that Mandarin is normally in the front of the teeth area. Another example that I have a LOT more experience with is German. It bounces from in the back of the mouth on the soft pallet to the middle of the roof of the mouth. I love this conversation so if yall speak another language put where you feel the placement is!!!

Spanish is not only related to Italian, but also more distantly to both English and Russian, so I absolutely see what you mean. I've been learning Mandarin for one year and sometimes it annoys me how languages like German and Italian are much easier for me to understand by default through my knowledge of other languages than Mandarin after so long, but whenever I understand things or manage to say a phrase correctly it fills my heart with joy.

I went in 2013 and the apps weren’t all that yet and it was tough. Went again in 2018 and it was easier then again in 2025 and it was chill as - the translate feature in Ali pay and WeChat are clutch.

Chinese is a tough language to learn. It’s a pictorial language and need you to have good memory. Easier when you are a child ..

I speak ~3 languages and how I learn is I create a Google doc and basically create sections based on what kind of word they are. So basically there's a seperate section for greetings,Manners,Foods,Places, people, etc. and then I create a seperate doc for conversation with the same template. so there's a section for ordering at a restaurant, discussing what I do for work, etc. it's helped a ton.

I live in shenzhen which is very international and all the service workers speak english. most younger people speak english. Ive been in china for 3 years and still only know basic survival and introduction conversations. I also spent 6 months learning beforehand. Hong kong Shenzhen Guangzhou is probably the best starter trip for the language barrier
