In one viral clip, a drone can be seen following two suspected grab-and-run thieves as they flee through a Ross parking lot in Concord, California. The technology is part of a growing “Drone as First Responder” approach, where some departments can deploy drones to incidents before officers arrive on scene. Similar systems have been used to follow suspects over long distances and help guide officers on the ground, while companies are also beginning to market drone security systems directly to retailers. With retail theft remaining a major concern for stores, drones could make simply running from the scene a lot harder. At the same time, their expanding use is raising questions about privacy and how much aerial surveillance communities are comfortable with.
