realistically speaking, he was acting through the overwhelming influence of drugs which was caused by the insane amount of emotional baggage ward has left him as a teen who clearly needed help and not neglect. doesn’t excuse him regardless, but for short: he isn’t his actions bcs he doesnt even know the full extent of it anyways. its why he didnt even bother correcting pope in the new season, bcs sober rafe knew that it was wrong and morally misproportionate regardless of his reason, even if he tries to believe it self defense, theres a clear part of him that knows that thought process wasn’t reasonable whatsoever.
