Allegedly, the word Malay derived from the Tamil word ‘மலை’ means mountains - when the chola dynasty were trading with Malaysia. They addressed the current Malaysia as ‘Malayur Makkal’ means people living in the mountains. Malaysia is known for beautiful mountains and the abundance nature surrounded it. So the ethnic group Malay got their name through this. Like i said allegedly, no one done research on it so we don’t know the historical behind this. Malaysia used to be known as Malaya before it gotten its current name :)
