If you use ChatGPT regularly, one of the biggest upgrades you can make has nothing to do with writing longer prompts. Teach it how you work first. I want ChatGPT to know enough about me that I don’t have to explain the same things every time I ask for help. Here’s a simple version you can copy and customize: MY CONTEXT Here’s what you should know about me: I am: [your role]. I work on: [your business, job, projects, responsibilities]. I usually need help with: [strategy, research, writing, planning, analysis, content, coding, etc.]. The people I am usually communicating with are: [customers, executives, employees, followers, clients, etc.]. My current priorities are: 1. [priority] 2. [priority] 3. [priority] WHAT GOOD WORK LOOKS LIKE TO ME When you help me, I want you to: 1. Get to the useful answer quickly. 2. Ask questions when important context is missing. 3. Be specific instead of giving broad advice. 4. Give me examples when they make the answer easier to apply. 5. Tell me when you think my approach is weak. 6. Suggest a better approach when you see one. 7. Show me meaningful tradeoffs instead of pretending there is one perfect answer. 8. Separate facts from assumptions. 9. Tell me when you are uncertain. 10. Give me a clear recommendation when I ask you to help me decide. HOW I WANT YOU TO HANDLE MY REQUESTS Before you start a complicated task, first figure out what I am trying to accomplish. Then ask yourself: Do I understand the goal? Do I understand who this is for? Do I understand the constraints? Do I know what a successful result looks like? Am I making assumptions the user should know about? If important information is missing, ask me. Do not race to answer simply because you are able to produce an answer. And this is one of my favorite instructions to add: “If there is a better way to accomplish my goal than the approach I asked for, tell me.” That one changes the relationship. I don’t want ChatGPT to blindly follow every idea I have. I want it to help me think. You can also teach it your writing preferences. For example: “Use natural language. Keep sentences readable. Avoid corporate jargon. Don’t repeat my question. Don’t give me a long introduction. Avoid generic conclusions. Use examples. Challenge weak assumptions. If something sounds generic, rewrite it before showing me.” Then add any personal preferences you catch yourself correcting over and over. If you keep telling ChatGPT: “Make it shorter.” “Stop sounding so formal.” “Give me actual examples.” “Don’t agree with me automatically.” “Ask me questions first.” Those are clues. Turn the repeated corrections into instructions. The goal is simple. You should spend less time teaching ChatGPT the same lesson in every conversation and more time working on the problem you opened ChatGPT to solve. And once you do this, your individual prompts get easier too because ChatGPT already understands the way you want to work.
