Yesterday a Collin County jury found Karmelo Anthony guilty of first degree murder and sentenced him to 35 years in prison. Here is what happened. On April 2nd 2025, Karmelo Anthony, 17, sat under the Memorial High School tent at a track meet in Frisco, Texas. He attended a different school. Austin Metcalf, 17, and his teammates told him to leave. The confrontation escalated. Metcalf pushed Anthony. Anthony pulled out a knife he had brought to the stadium and stabbed Austin Metcalf once in the chest. Metcalf was rushed to the hospital. He never made it out. Anthony surrendered to police immediately, crying hysterically, asking if Metcalf would survive. He told officers he was protecting himself. The case divided the entire country. Protests outside the courthouse. Racial tensions. A national debate over self defense. Nearly 600 jurors were summoned for the trial. Yesterday the jury deliberated for less than three hours.
