I’ve always said this! As a new grad I feel more new grads would want med surg if they had better ratios and were able to spend time with there patients

I honestly like med surg. I feel like if the ratio was kept at 1:4 that more nurses would enjoy it! You learn so much in med surg & it honestly prepares you to transition into any specialty, it builds a great foundation.

Medsurg here! On my 3rd year and it’s the trenches!!!! But I am glad I did it bc I feel like I can handle a LOT.

This is reassuring to me. As a med surg nurse, I feel like we don’t have as much support and acknowledgement in what we do - that seems to translate to the lack of resources, staff, and overall respect we get. I feel like I’m starting to lose my sense of purpose in nursing the more I continue in med surg, and hopefully critical care nursing restores that back

I’m in the ICU and I agree. Since so many of our patients are total care and we don’t really have techs, I feel like I do more of the “fundamentals” that everyone says you should start out in med surg to learn. I performed more oral care in my first few weeks of ICU than I saw in all of my hospital med surg clinicals combined, for example.

this is so nice to know, i currently work on a surgical floor right out of school and all i do is check boxes and hope for the best but my goal is peds heme/onc and i just know once im where i want to go it’ll feel like i found my purpose.

I learned more total care and fundamental in ICU. Full head to toe assessments, hemodynamics, oral care, full bed baths etc. all floating to med surg did was teach me better time management and dealing with bs
