1️⃣ TONGUE COATING 👅 The tongue—especially toward the back—can collect bacteria, dead cells and food debris. These bacteria can produce volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) responsible for that unpleasant smell. Tongue coating is considered one of the major sources of oral malodor. 2️⃣ FOOD & PLAQUE BETWEEN THE TEETH 🦷 A toothbrush simply cannot clean every surface between teeth. Trapped food and bacterial plaque can contribute to odor even when your child brushes twice a day. 3️⃣ CAVITIES OR INFLAMED GUMS 🩸 Persistent bad breath can sometimes be associated with dental decay, gingivitis or other oral disease. Pediatric reviews specifically identify caries and gingivitis among the common oral factors associated with halitosis. 4️⃣ MOUTH BREATHING 😮‍💨 This one gets overlooked. Mouth breathing can reduce the cleansing effect of saliva and is associated with bad breath in children. One study of 785 children found mouth breathers had approximately 3× the odds of halitosis. 5️⃣ ADENOIDS, TONSILS OR NASAL CONGESTION 👃 If a child regularly breathes through their mouth, snores or sleeps with their mouth open, look beyond the toothbrush. Allergic rhinitis, enlarged adenoids and enlarged tonsils are common causes of pediatric mouth breathing. 6️⃣ SOMETHING STUCK IN THE NOSE 🤯 Especially with younger children, a foreign object in the nose can sometimes cause a foul smell. If the odor seems to come predominantly from one nostril, particularly with discharge, have the child evaluated rather than trying to remove something deeply lodged yourself. 7️⃣ DRY MOUTH 💧 Saliva is your mouth’s natural cleaning system. Less saliva means less natural washing away of bacteria and debris—and potentially more odor-producing compounds. BOTTOM LINE 👇 Bad breath isn’t a diagnosis. It’s a clue. Start with the basics: Brush the teeth. Clean the tongue. Clean between the teeth. Keep them hydrated. But if bad breath continues despite good oral hygiene, don’t keep covering it up with stronger mint. Find the source. Start with your child’s dentist. If the mouth looks healthy, persistent symptoms—particularly nasal obstruction, snoring, mouth breathing or one-sided nasal discharge—may warrant evaluation by their pediatrician or ENT.
