@jacqueslees: Brake Block for Mining Locomotive (Mining Electric Locomotive Brake Block) Also known as non-metallic brake blocks, composition brake blocks are manufactured by mixing asbestos and other fillers with resin or rubber as a binder, and then hot-pressing the mixture. Composition brake blocks are classified, on the basis of their basic composition, into synthetic resin-based brake blocks and rubber-based brake blocks. According to the level of their friction coefficient, they are classified into high-friction coefficient composition brake blocks and low-friction coefficient composition brake blocks. Composition brake blocks are also reinforced with a steel backing. The friction coefficient of high-friction coefficient composition brake blocks is approximately twice that of cast iron brake blocks. This makes it possible to use brake cylinders and auxiliary reservoirs (auxiliary air reservoirs) of smaller diameter, thereby reducing the weight of the foundation brake rigging, and also saving compressed air. They therefore offer numerous advantages.
